Ally week is a student-organized action, powered by Gay-Straight Alliances and supported by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) taking place September 28th - October 2nd, 2015. It is an opportunity to engage in a national conversation about the meaning of allyship. Take this opportunity with the EGHS Gay-Straight Alliance to learn about what does it mean to be an ally and what actions you can take to better support LGBTQ communities and students.
What is an ally?
An ally is someone who advocates for, supports, and accepts members of a marginalized group with which they do not identify. GLSEN's Ally Week focuses on being an ally for LGBTQ youth that face bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools because of their sexual orientation, identity or expression.
During Ally Week, the EGHS Gay-Straight Alliance will have different events during lunch hours in the Foyer Conference Room. Feel free to stop by any time during lunch hours! Here is a schedule of the activities we will be doing throughout the week:
Monday: "Selfies for Ally Week" - Stop by to take a selfie with the GLSEN selfie sign #MyAllies
Tuesday: "Selfies for Ally Week" - Second chance to take a selfie
Wednesday: Guest Speaker, Krupa Patel. Q&A Session and Henna Painting
Thursday: Why do we need allies? - Sign the pledge!
Friday: Know your terms! Challenge your classmates or teachers on a Kahoot! round about LGBTQ terminology.
Please visit the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) website to learn more about Ally week and how you, as a staff member or student, can be a better ally and make EGHS an even more inclusive and safe space for everyone.
